Over the past 10 years, in western Romania, more than two thirds of the patients that suffer from allergic rhinoconjunctivitis or asthma have become sensitized to ragweed.

The flare of for the symptoms of seasonal allergies is in close dependency with the climate data. The speed and direction of the wind, precipitations and temperature are factors which influence the level of discomfort of the allergy patient.

In Europe, the areas most infested with A. artemisiifolia and therefore the most important sources of ragweed pollen are: Hungary, Romania, Serbia, France, Italy and Ukraine.

INNOVATIVE STRATEGIES FOR PREVENTION, DIAGNOSIS AND THERAPY OF RAGWEED POLLEN INDUCED RESPIRATORY DISEASES

Innovative Strategies for Prevention, Diagnosis and Therapy of Ragweed Pollen Induced Respiratory Diseases (SMIS code 103662) is a project implemented from 09.09.2016 to 08.09.2019 in the Centre for Gene and Cellular Therapies in the Treatment of Cancer – OncoGen within Pius Brinzeu Emergency Clinical County Hospital Timisoara, based on the funding contract number 92 from 09.09.2016.

The project runs for 36 months and is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund under Competitiveness Operational Programme 2014-2020, Priority Axis 1 „Research, Technological Development and Innovation (RDI) to support economic competitiveness and business development”, Action 1.1.4 „ Attracting high-level personnel from abroad in order to enhance the RD capacity”, Project Type „ Attracting high-level personnel from abroad”.

The total value of the project is 8,903,265.22 RON, with a total eligible value of 8,477,610.10 lei, representing the eligible non-reimbursable financial assistance, out of which 7,158,493.97 RON from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and 1,319,116.13 RON from the national budget.

The INSPIRED project is implemented in partnership with the prestigious team coordinated by Prof. Rudolf Valenta from the Medical University Vienna.

The main objective of the INSPIRED project is to develop a new diagnostic kit, based on recombinant allergen use, specific for ragweed allergic patients, which will better direct the therapy, with the support of an international team by attracting foreign specialists with recognized competence, thus increasing the Romanian participation in research areas at European level, and creating a scientific research core of specialists in advanced technologies based on recombinant allergens applications of European level.
